Temple: The
Big Temple built by the great
Chola King, Raja Raja 1 in the 10th century AD is an
outstanding example of the Chola architecture. Rajaraja
Cholan built this Temple with tall tower 216 feet.
Nandi, Bull is 12 feet tall, weighs
around 25 tons and a Mandapam for the Nandi to protect
it from sun and rain.
Sivagangai Garden::
It is said the original shrine of the goddess, was
located in the adjoining sivagangai gardens and was
later removed to main courtyard of the temple. It
is a very beautiful park, located north of the big
temple. It has a good collection of beautiful flowers
plants and birds and animals.
Saraswathi Mahal
Library: This
library has one of the most important oriental
manuscripts collections, in India. Established
around 1700 AD, it contains over 44,000-palm
leaf, paper manuscripts in Indian and European
languages. Over 80% of its manuscripts are
in Sanskrit are rare and unique.
Palace: The
Palace, on the east main street is a series
of large and rambling buildings of fine masonry
was built partly by Nayaks around 1550 AD,
and
partly by Marathas. On southern side of the
third quadrangle is a Vimana like building,
190 feet
high with eight storeys with Goodagopuram etc.
